Camp and Week 2 Learning

Kaya, 

I hope you all had a great weekend, winter has started to set in and we have started lighting the fire in the Schoen/Hurst household. I love the feeling of drinking tea beside a warm fire. I really enjoy winter in Australia, as it reminds of me the weather back home. In the six seasons calendar we are now in the season of Djeran, which is known as the season of Adulthood and is where the cooler weather begins. The students will be learning about Djeran over the upcoming weeks. 

We have had a wonderful week back to school although I am sure your children are very tired, from both camp and the first week back. For term 2, I have introduce lots of new roles and responsibilities to the 6H community as well as the students taking on ministries, I am proud to say they have all taken these roles on with gusto!!! 👏

Spending the week on camp with this group of year 6 students was wonderful. It was a privilege to watch them test and push themselves, really showcasing their resilience when it came to overcoming their fears and stepping outside of their comfort zone. The students wrote a reflection letter to themselves, reminiscing on their time on camp and how they showed a growth mindset throughout camp and overcame their fears. The activities that the students took part on are listed below: 

1. High Ropes

2. Abseiling and Rock Climbing

3. Archery and Bike Ride

4. Cultural Studies (Making damper over a fire, creating their own bush paints and painting their boomerang) 

5. Low ropes - team challenge

6. Team game challenges 

We were so proud of the students behavior, choices and resilience on camp, they really made the school proud. Specifically as we were on camp with three other schools. 

To view the wonderful moments and memories from camp please get your student to click on their 6H Microsoft Team tomorrow afternoon, they will find the images from camp under Files - under a folder marked Year 6 camp. I will go through these steps with the students tomorrow morning, they can then go home and view them with you. Please note these images will not be ready until tomorrow for viewing.

⭐⭐Merit Award⭐⭐

Congratulations to Lara Murray for winning our Merit Award at the end of week 2 of learning for her generous leadership skills. Lara has taken on the new roles and responsibilities within the 6H community with enthusiasm and independence. She is demonstrating and showcasing to the rest of the school what it means to be a Year 6 leader at OLC. Well done Lara, keep up the hard work! 👏

Learning from the last week of Term 2:

New Roles and Responsibilities:

In term 2 it is 6H's responsibility to run the schools ministries. This involves taking on specific leadership roles within the wider school community that aid to the flow of learning throughout the busy school week. Example, within the communication ministry the students are responsible for the set up and running of the assembly on Friday afternoon, including the speaking roles within. Well Done to Myla and Nina for their first speaking role at Friday's assembly, they made us all very proud and spoke excellently. The students conduct their role within their faction and each faction is assigned a specific ministry role. Below you will find a timetable for ministries including information on what is involved in each role.

I have also created new roles and responsibilities for 6H to set as class jobs as they all grow their leadership skills over the upcoming year. Some of these jobs at times require more responsibility than others. However, I believe all the students are more than ready. Some of these new jobs are listed below:

Blog - From now on two/three students will be responsible for writing our class blog for the previous week. I will create the first blog of each term so they have a blog to mirror however, I think the students will be more than capable. So from next week on, you will be recieving a blog created and wrote by the Year 6 students, how exciting. This will start from next week on with Jake, Jeremy and Ari creating the first student blog. I hope you enjoy!

Kindness Project - Two students a week will be responsible for the kindess project, this involves them taking ownership and responsibility of making small random, annomous acts of kindness for students, teachers and staff at OLC. Last week Holly and Holly were on kindness patrol and it was awesome to see the happy faces from teachers who got their random, kind notes or little messages on whiteboards around the school. Well done girls! 💙💚💛💜

Prayer Patrol - Two students a week will be responsible for selecting and running morning prayer in 6H. Georgia and Violet worked wonderfully together and selected a beautiful prayer during the week. 

MJR:

During the last week, we were very fortunate to have a wonderful guest speaker in to showcase to us a great Making Jesus Real (MJR) lesson. Peter Mitchell (Mitch), the developer of the MJR program came to 6H to teach a lesson. Mitch reminded us to seek out the "Oh Yeah" moments in life and to always be respectful by greeting and thanking people whilst using their names. He also taught us the old story about the two wolves that live inside us.
*Ask your child to recall the tale of the two wolves, ask them which wolf they feed the most?*
We will be completing a reflecting task for Mitch and throughout MJR lessons for the duration of the year focusing on the key points from the Making Jesus Real program. We will also be using these lessons to keep a reflection journal looking at moments when we see Jesus in others and ourselves. Thank you Mitch for a wonderful lesson. 🙌

Maths:

During the last week, we have started looking at the new topic of fractions. We have started the week looking at the math language surrounding fractions - denominator, numerator. Get your child to explain the difference to you? We then moved on to look at fractions with related denominators and looked at placing them on a number line. We did this outside using chalk and worked in teams to place the fractions.

Next week we will moving to math rotations across the two Year 6 classes which allow myself and Mrs Ricciardone more extended time with smaller groups of students and ensure we have the opportunity to see all of the students. We will also be continuing our work on the timestables for homework, as it was clear after completing a diagnostic assessment within the classroom of x9, x11, x12 that the students need to continue their practice.

Congratulations to Mrs Meyer: 

OLC is delighted to announce that Mrs Amie Meyer has officially been appointed Assistant Principal at OLC. Amie has acted in this role over the past few years while she has been completing her studies in RE. Amie is an excellent ambassador and role model for the faith development of our community. We are very fortunate to have Amie as a leader at our school.👏

Year 6 Assembly:

The Year 6 Assembly will happen in two weeks (14th May - 2.20pm). Both 6R and 6H will work together to complete this assembly. It will be a performance assembly, please be aware that we may be sending students home with lines to revise and may request props too. Thank you in advance for your help and support. We look forward to seeing you all there on the day.

Winter Uniforms:

A reminder that all students should be in their winter uniform from week 3 of learning. If you have any questions regarding uniform or your child is missing any of the items from the winter uniform please contact the OLC front office. 

Community Support:

Dear OLC Community,
As you know one of our family's recently suffered the unexpected loss of their husband and father in February this year. Dave Clift was husband to Annmarie and dad to Violet in Year 5H, and to former OLC students Damon (17), and Sunny (15). Annmarie has been overwhelmed by the love and support she has already received in terms of willing listeners, shoulders to cry on and lovingly prepared meals. Many people have continued to ask how they might best help the family as they move forward. Here is a way. Without Dave and an income, Annmarie could really use some financial support. Homework 

Due: Friday, 7th May
Our homework diaries having not arrived as yet. The students will continue using their homework books for now. Thank you to those parents that sign the students work, please ensure you do this especially on a Thursday night before they return to class on a Friday. At times, the students may take home other work that they have not completed in class to be returned completed by a set day and time. 
Home Learning Grid includes:
1. Reading 20 minutes each night - write title and amount read into their homework book each night.
2. Spelling Activities - spelling grid to be completed in homework book. 
3. Mathematics - Times Tables 
4. Three well-being tasks from learning grid.
