Week 7 & 8 - Term 1 2023

KAYA,

Congratulations, to all those students who completed their Year 4 Eucharist this morning. What a beautiful ceremony held at the church. It was nice to see so many of our Year 6 leaders, either celebrating this occasion with their families or singing and supporting. 🙌

My God moment this week has got to be celebrating Saint Patrick's day with the Year 6 crew. It was amazing seeing so many green clothes and costumes. It made feel very special sharing this day with the students. Please see below some of their awesome Leprechaun Traps.

Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona duit! (Happy St. Patrick's Day to you!)
I also just wanted to include a little note on Saint Patrick's Day for those of you that do not know the background. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century, he was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped but returned about 432 to convert the Irish to Christianity. There are many legends surrounding the life of Saint Patrick including the legend where he rid Ireland of snakes.

There are many traditions that we celebrate on Saint Patricks Day and many symbols used for the day. Including:
The color green - Catholics are known to wear green on the holiday of Saint Patrick. It is also the colour of Ireland too.
The four and three leaf clover - While trying to convert the Irish into Christians, St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the holy trinity with each leaf representing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The three leaves of a shamrock are also said to stand for faith, hope and love. A fourth leaf is where we get the luck from.
A leprechaun - According to Irish folklore, leprechauns were cranky tricksters who you wouldn't want to mess with. They live alone and pass the time by playing tricks on the Irish people. The good-natured leprechaun soon became a symbol of St. Patrick's Day and Ireland in general.

Our Learning:

Seesaw - Please log in to your child's seesaw account so that you can start to see some of their assessments displayed. The students will be posting a math assessment this week. Please let me know if you need a new login sent home this week.

Math - Throughout this term, in math we have been looking at perimeter, area, surface are, 3D shapes and their nets. This week the students will be completing their summative project which will test the students on all of the above. Watch this space to view your students awesome work on seesaw.

Writing - Over the past two weeks, we have started writing our own version of the story of Narnia. We have included a new and exciting story starter, a description of how the children left their mother and moved to the countryside and how they found the magical wardrobe. Then from there the students used their 5 senses to help describe the world beyond the wardrobe. Their inclusion of adjectives, alliteration and wonderful descriptions have ensured that these stories will be an exciting read. Next week we will be creating our very own "Narnian" character to add into the story and developing our 3 mini problems working to the climax of the story.
Please note: We intend to watch the rest of  'Narnia - the Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe' over the upcoming two weeks in class. This movie is rated PG therefore I am required to inform you and ask that if you would prefer that your child didn't see the film that you notify me of this ASAP.

Religion - In Religion, we will be completing a seesaw task this week that will include information and details about Holy week and the various important dates that lie ahead in the upcoming three weeks in the church's calendar.

Character Strengths:
Parents, this week we are looking at developing the character strength of Honesty. St Gertrude the Great is known as a powerful champion of truth and justice. She was a Benedictine Nun who dedicated her work to theology, learning and writing.
• Do you like to know the truth?
• Do you like people to be truthful to you?
