Hello from Ellie & Sian - Week 5 learning Term 2

Kaya,

This blog has been expertly created by Ellie Richardson and Sian Roberts, and I am sure you will agree that they have done a wonderful job.

Everyone, I hope you all had a refreshing weekend with your family and friends. As the weather begins to get colder we are all reminded that Dijeran is almost at its end, and we will be plunging into the cold months of Makuru. We have had a busy week so hold tight to your seat-belt.
Did you know that Miss Hurst favourite animal is a sloth? 🦥

A massive well done and congratulations to Holly Greening, who came 4th this weekend in two different showjumping classes (15 years and under) at the State Jumping Championships. 🏇🐎

⭐⭐Star Citizen Award⭐⭐
Well done to Ellie Richardson for receiving our 6H Star Citizen for Appreciation for Term 2.  Ellie continually demonstrate manners, words and actions that show gratitude to others in our community. She is a true leader in our school when it comes to appreciation including the adults around her. We could all learn from Ellie, on how to show someone that they are truly seen and appreciated. She is the first to say good morning and the first to say good afternoon every day, she is always thoughtful in her speech and always remember when speaking to people to use their name and make eye contact. Through her example we can learn how to be more appreciative of those around us. The world is a better place because she is in it and OLC is very lucky to have her as a true leader in our school. Well done Ellie.

All funds raised will help seriously ill or injured children and their families by providing a home-away-from-home at Ronald McDonald House, whilst they receive critical care and treatment. All students and staff joined in an awesome dance routine on Friday, it was wonderful to see all the talent, smiles, energy and enthusiasm from both staff and students. Click below to watch the video.

Learning from week 5 of Term 2:

Maths:
In math we are learning about converting fractions to decimals, first we learn how to convert fractions like halves, quarters and tenths to hundredths then we convert them to decimals. And we are continuing our math rotations with games, mathletics, and teacher guided practice.

Writing:
In writing we have moved on from our narrative Narnia stories and on to Information Reports! This week we did our cold task on, the Numbat a critically endangered West Australian Animal.

Our Narnia Retold class book, containing all of our creative Narnia stories will be available to read in the class very soon.

Reading:
We have resumed our reading groups and we are continuing to do our guided reading rotations, which includes: reading comprehension, free choice writing and readers theater to help with our knowledge of reading and writing. We are also starting to keep a whole class tally of all the books we read as we finish them, currently we are on a total of 27. 📚📙📘📗📕

Spelling:
In spelling we our doing our usual soundwaves spelling sheet and segmenting page.

Religion:
In religion we are learning about the 7 sacraments and what it means to the church we are learning about the importance of these sacraments. We also completed an art project sheet on it, that is now hanging in our classroom. We will be doing a quiz on these sacraments on these next week.

Important Information:

Character Strengths:
Dear Parents, currently at OLC we are focusing on modeling and observing different character strengths. The strengths that we will focus on are taken directly from the VIA Institute for Character. If you wanted to learn more about this please follow the link to the 24 character strengths: https://www.viacharacter.org/character-strengths
This upcoming week we are looking for people who show Bravery. Can you encourage your child to reflect on the following?

Community Support:
Dear OLC Community,
As you know one of our family's recently suffered the unexpected loss of their husband and father in February this year. Dave Clift was husband to Annmarie and dad to Violet in Year 5H, and to former OLC students Damon (17), and Sunny (15). Annmarie has been overwhelmed by the love and support she has already received in terms of willing listeners, shoulders to cry on and lovingly prepared meals. Many people have continued to ask how they might best help the family as they move forward. Here is a way. Without Dave and an income, Annmarie could really use some financial support. If you are able, even if in a small way to contribute to this Go Fund Me Campaign, she would be forever grateful. Thank you and may God Bless you.

OLC Celebrates National Sorry Day – Bring a T Shirt!
Wednesday the 26th May marks National Sorry Day and Thursday the 27th marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week. These are important dates for us to acknowledge as we work toward harmony and intercultural understanding as a nation.
The theme for Reconciliation week this year is: More than a word … Reconciliation takes action. Considering this theme, we are planning on conducting a whole school event involving all OLC students, and parents are asked dress their child with either a black, red or yellow T shirt (any shade or hue is fine) and black sports shorts on the day of Wednesday 26th May. This might not mean buying a T-Shirt – school sports shirts for Meelup and Leeuwin could be worn, or any T’s you already have at home which are predominantly one of these colours will be fine. Stay tuned to our Social Media platforms during Reconciliation Week to see the fruits of out labours!
