Hello from Lily and Avalon- Week 7 learning Term 2

 Kaya,

This blog has been expertly created by Avalon Paterson and Lily Rawling, and I am sure you will agree that they have done a wonderful job.

Wadandi boodja, Wadan Boonar Moort Kaaditjin Wongi, Nitcha Wadandi Noongar Boodja.

We have now finally entered the Wadandi season of Makuru!! It is now the coldest and wettest time of the year. Makuru is also known as the fertility season.

This week, the years five and six participated in the Winter Sports Carnival versing against other schools. Each student played either netball, hockey, footy or soccer. Let's go OLC!

At the moment in Religion, we are learning about the 7 sacraments. Baptism is part of the initiation stage. Speaking of baptism, did you know that Lara’s mum is German and, Lara was baptised in Germany?

May Birthdays:
Happy Birthday to Orlando Gianoncelli who celebrated his birthday yesterday, Saturday the 5th June. The other birthdays for June are:
Georgia Breheny - 27th June
Jake Veitch - 28th June 2010
Happy Birthday to you all, we hope you have a wonderful June and a fantastic Birthday!

Learning from week 7 of Term 2:

Maths:
In Math we are learning how to multiply and divide decimals. We are still continuing with our math group rotation which includes peer practice (games), guided practice (with the teacher) or mathletics (independent). We now see how important times tables really are - quick fast - what is 8 x 9?
Can you spot what is missing at the end of this calculation above?
Always remember to count the decimal places at the end and add the decimal point back in at the end of the sum otherwise the sum is incorrect.

Writing:
This week in writing we are focusing on using the PEEL strategy to write a paragraph for an information report on the critically endangered Numbat. For those who don’t know what the PEEL strategy is, we will tell you.
P – Point, E – Example, E – Explain, L – link.

Spelling:
In spelling we our doing our usual soundwaves spelling sheet and segmenting page. Don't forget spelling test this upcoming Friday 11th June. Remember to practice spelling words from week 6 and 7. 😎

Technologies:
In technologies we have been learning about sustainability. We learned about a true story of a student in Bangladesh - Iqbal who created a solar oven to help his family. We learnt about the power of a solar oven and how it can be used effectively in third world countries. We are in the process of making and designing our own solar ovens to cook four different types of foods in preparation for building them in two weeks time (Thursday 10th June).

Students will need to bring supplies for their solar oven on Thursday the 10th of June. Students are not to purchase any materials but use recycling and materials from their home. Please see below the basic solar oven model and materials needed to make.

Important Information:

Character Strengths -
Dear Parents, currently at OLC we are focusing on modeling and observing different character strengths. The strengths that we will focus on are taken directly from the VIA Institute for Character. If you wanted to learn more about this please follow the link to the 24 character strengths: https://www.viacharacter.org/character-strengths
This upcoming week we are looking for people who show Curiousity. Can you encourage your child to reflect on the following?

Each student in 6H did the character survey on Monday this week and learned about their 24 character strengths, focusing mainly on their top 5. Each student downloaded information on their individual strengths and you can view them on their laptop. It would be interesting to see if you agree with what they got. We will be focusing on these strengths over the upcoming weeks.
