Hello from Nina and Myla - Week 8 Learning Term 3

This blog has been expertly created by Myla Fursdon and Nina Hutton, and I am sure you will agree that they have done a wonderful job.

This week was a very busy week with a lot of important events. On Friday, Mrs Haines (our amazing dance teacher) ran our OLC’s got talent and she did an amazing job, and the show ran so smoothly. We also had our school photos on Thursday along with our graduation photo on Friday. Can you say CHEESE??? 🧀

Now we are in the season of Djilba, this is the start of the massive flowering explosion that happens in the Southwest. I can't wait, can you? 🥀


Did you know that Lara and Lilly starred in a horror film and managed to get in the final out of 29 people? They even got to walk the red carpet?

⭐⭐6H's Got Talent⭐⭐
Well done to all the students that participated in OLC has got talent on Friday. A massive congratulations to our year 6 winners including the boys from the hood, Tieg and Noah and our whip cracking extraordinaire Sian. 


Learning from week 8 of Term 3:

Art:
During week 8, we are continued completing our Wadandi Six Season calendar art piece. We also started our peace poster, working on the topic ‘We are Connected’. Schools compete all around the world and the winner gets $5,000. Another thing we have been doing this week is our book week art, our book is Aster’s Good Right Things by Kate Gordon. We must draw half of Asters face with what we think Aster looks like and the other half we fill in with symbols that represent her personality.




Math:
This week in Math’s we learned how to work out the discount of a price.
Steps for the process:
10% off $50
1. Convert the percentage into a fraction – 10% = 1/10
2. Divide the denominator by the price - $50 divided by 10 = 5
3. Multiply your answer with the numerator – 5 multiplied by 1 = 5
4. Minus your answer with the price – $50 minus 5 = $45
And that is your answer 😊 We also did a pre-algebra test, and everyone went really well.


Writing:
This week in writing we did our hot task. We had to do the same topic as our cold task, but we had to make it better now we know all the persuasive tools to make our persuasive writing really good. We are also continuing to put the finishing touches on our persuasive writing letter that we have been working on for a few weeks. You will be able to view our hot task very soon on Seesaw with feedback and our Brightpath score so watch this space.

2040 Documentary Viewing


We would like to invite you and your child to come and watch the 2040 movie documentary at Our Lady of the Cape in the hall, after school on Wednesday 22nd September at 4pm.
In a world full of negativity about the current climate situation, add some inspiration and hope to both you and your child's mind. Where you find hope, you find change. The documentary is only 90 minutes long and there will be some small speeches by the students before and after the documentary.

There will be a small gold coin donation to enter - $2 per person, all of this proceeds will be donated to the Numbat Association.

Footy Sport Colour Day
On the last day of school we will have a footy/sport colours day. Gold coin donation with all funds going to our pastoral care fridge and St Vinnies. 💚💚💚💚

Book Week
Our Book Week celebration will be held in the final week of term with the dress-up assembly being held first part of the day. (There is a slight chance the costumes may not be at their finest at our normal assembly time!)


Character Strengths
Dear Parents, currently at OLC we are focusing on modeling and observing different character strengths. The strengths that we will focus on are taken directly from the VIA Institute for Character. This upcoming week we are looking for people who show Kindness. Can you encourage your child to reflect on the following?


Operation Christmas Child 

It's that time of year that we participate in the 'Operation Christmas Child' shoe box initiative that has been a wonderful OLC tradition for many years and reflects our school value of Compassion so well. These shoe boxes are sent to underprivileged children throughout the world as a gift for Christmas.
The children will be placed into in groups of four and between them, they will fill a shoebox with a variety of items. The items do not need to be expensive. Each child in the group will be asked to cover the cost of sending the shoebox to its final destination. We ask them to bring in $2.50 each. The children will be given time in the classroom to pack the shoebox and explore some of the places that their shoe boxes may be travelling to.

Please check your child's note that clearly states which item category they need to bring:
- Something to love
- Something to play with
- Something to draw with or write on
- Something for personal hygiene 
- Something to wear 

Items are to be no longer than 20cm long and not too bulky as they will not fit in the shoe box. 

If you have any queries or concerns can you please contact me A.S.A.P, as the children will need to have their items in by the End of week 9 (Friday 16th September). We will have a box at the front of the classroom for all donations to be put into.

Seesaw App - Please note there are some families that have still not connected to their child's Seesaw app, can you please use the QR code sent home with your child to login and access your child's portfolio of work. Please let me know if you have any issues or questions.

Homework

The students homework is due on Friday the 17th of September. This week will have a different task within their homework, a project to complete at home. The students will need to complete an art project - Peace Poster.

Please ensure all students are completing their homework and getting you to check it with a signature nightly and then signing the learning grid and homework diary on a Thursday afternoon before it is returned. Students who have not completed their homework will complete it during class time and during recess and lunch, an email will also be sent home to notify you. This organisation and time management skills is vital to aid in an easier transition to high school. 

Home Learning Grid includes:

  1. Reading x 20 minutes every night - students to write up the pages that they read that night and the parent to sign every night.
  2. Spelling Activities - spelling grid to be completed in homework book.
  3. Three well-being tasks from learning grid.
  4. NEW!! Art Project - Peace Poster - due Friday 17th September (needs to be brought back to school on Friday to work on in class. 
  5. Any unfinished class tasks.
  6. Operation Christmas Child.

K AY A, I hope you have all had a tremendous break with this cracker sunshine. 🌞 I cannot wait to see the 6H family back in the classroom for an AWESOME term 4! We are going to end their time at OLC with smiles, busy times, Confirmation, Graduation, Excursions, Incursions and lots of learning! Week 7 and 8 of Term 4

K AY A, Can you believe that there is only 15 days left in Primary School for your child? WOW! Not only that but most of these days will include end of year excursion, practice at the Church and in the hall for Graduation and lots of end of year preparations!  Year 6 End of Year Gift  A massive thank you to the three wonderful parents who came along on Wednesday in week 6 to complete the end of year 6 gift artwork. The students did a really wonderful job on their own individual paver, which together will make up the OLC Reconciliation Pathway to the Aboriginal area at the back of the school. What an amazing legacy to leave behind - so watch this space! Well done team! Graduation Practice and Year 6 Busy Bee  Graduation Practice will start down at the Church in week 7 and 8. The students are allowed to wear their sport uniform on these days. This will be a strong focus for the next few weeks. Important Camp Reminders and Important Information

  K AY A, Can you believe that it is only  5  sleeps until we depart for Year 6 camp??? The students are going to have the most amazing time; we will be taking part in activities like wall climbing, zip-lining, abseiling and team games as well as lots of fun group activities.  Please remember we will depart OLC at 8.40 on Monday morning. Your student will need to arrive around 8.15am and place their bags for camp outside the hall in front of the double doors. They will then make their way to the classroom for the class role. Students will need to ensure they have used the bathroom as the bus is a two hour drive. They will also need to take out any medical items from their bag and provide this to the teacher in a clear zip lock bag with their name on it.  We hope the students have started to prepare their bags for camp using the camp what to bring list below. The advice we gave the students during the week was to use their packing list and cross the items off as they put them in their b
