And we are back - term 4, here we come!!

Kaya,, Can you believe that we have finally made it to Term 4?

I am just so proud of all the students in 6H and I am so excited to see what Term 4 will bring for them all. 6H has become a small family and I missed all of the students while they were on holidays. My plan for Term 4 is to prepare them as much as possible for high school, whilst enjoying their last few months at Our Lady of the Cape. I hope you have all enjoyed every minute of your holiday and managed to have time with friends, family and lots of fun. I got to spend some awesome time with friends in Perth and then myself and Damien went to Albany for a few days and climbed Bluff Knoll. We were looking for extra punishment as we decided to do the sunrise hike, I have not been that cold since living in Ireland, however, my, my was it worth it, with that spectacular view! I am continually reminded that we live in a very special place in the world, considering what everybody else is going through with COVID19.

In Term 4, we will be welcoming a new (old) student to the 6H family. When I say new and old, Olivia, was a previous student at OLC and has returned for Term 4. We are so excited to have you join us Olivia and I hope you feel very welcome and happy in 6H. If you see the family around the school, please introduce yourself and welcome them all back to OLC.

⭐⭐Star Citizen⭐⭐
Well done to Charlie McClenaughan for receiving our 6H Star Citizen Award for Term 3 for Respect. Charlie won this star citizen award for being an outstanding Year 6 role model and leader. He consistently displays respect for everyone around him, especially his teachers. He is always first to say good morning and the first to say good afternoon at the end of the day. Charlie also consistently says thank you, to his teachers for their lessons. During lessons Charlie listens to his peers and always add depth and opinion to class discussions. He also shows respectful admiration for his peers and celebrates in their highs and supports them in their lows. He can also always be seen respecting the OLC school uniform, wearing it correctly, especially wearing his hat, during recess and lunch. OLC and 6H is very lucky to have Charlie as a true and respectful leader in our class and school. Well done, Charlie.

🖌🎨Peace Poster Winner🖌🎨
Well done to Prada Piaggi for her outstanding peace poster submission. Prada was voted the winner of OLC by the teachers and Year 4 and 5 students. Prada your work was beautiful. A massive shout out to all the year 6 students who worked very hard on their Peace Poster. All the teachers said that this was most amazing year with entries.

Term 4 week 1 Information:

Novel Study - 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman

In English this term we are starting with a whole class novel study on the book 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman. For those unfamiliar to this text, it is a children’s historical fiction novel. Set in Poland during World War II, the story follows Felix, a 10-year-old Jewish boy being hidden from the Nazis in a Catholic orphanage, as he embarks on a quest to find his parents. Gleitzman was inspired by the true experiences of the Polish-Jewish educator and author Janusz Korczak during the Holocaust. Korczak is the inspiration for the character Barney, who sacrifices himself to try to ensure the well-being of Jewish orphans. Once is the first title in his seven-book series that follows Felix through World War II into old age.

I am aware a few students have already read this book, however they will develop a deeper understanding of WWII and the holocaust as I will be providing support through numerous writing sessions that will give them the background information they required to really understand the novel.

After this the students will then participate in a novel study on a teacher-selected book, which will be read at school as well as sent home for homework reading. Please keep an eye for these novels starting week 3.

Seesaw
Seesaw has been a brilliant reporting tool for us as teachers and we love seeing your comments on all your children’s work. We are looking forward to continuing this great reporting method this term along with your child’s end of semester report which will include grades and a general comment. We can’t wait to share more of our amazing work with you before the end of Term Four, so keep an eye out for our amazing work to come!

Graduation PowerPoint
I am are hoping that you can find and email me a photo of your child as a baby and/or toddler. We would like to create a PowerPoint for Graduation with these special photos, as well as others from their time at OLC. If you have any ripper photos from your child's time at OLC, we would greatly appreciate any donations. Please email them through so I can get onto this job as soon as I can.

Stationary
If you can please take a moment to remind your child to clean out their pencil cases and check if they are missing anything. Even today I noticed that students were still walking around for glue, erasers and coloured pencils.
Students having what they need goes a long way to helping them feel organised and in control.

Laptops
Please also remind your child to put their laptop on charge ready for each day, as work that is not complete in class because of a flat laptop will be sent home for ADDITIONAL homework.

Summer Uniform
Not that it feels like it but we are back in summer uniform. There is a two week swap over period so long pants are still welcome as the weather is still cool! Don't forget summer dresses with white socks for girls.

Hats
Please make sure that your child has a hat that stays in their school bag - this was a major issue towards the end of last term and just creates stress for them as they aren't able to go down to the oval, basketball courts or nature playground areas.

Learning from week 10 of Term 3:

Ellensbrook Excursion:
God blessed us with fantastic weather on our excursion to Ellensbrook house in Margaret River. We learned about the interwoven history at Ellensbrook including the early settlement history and the Wadandi history. We learned that the Aboriginal name for Ellensbrook is Mokidup and just a small walk from the homestead will take you to Meekadarribee, the bathing place of the moon. It is very bad luck to gaze upon the moon "Meeka" as it bathes here. We also got to explore the homestead with the wonderful tour guide Skye.

We were very fortunate to have the most wonderful parent helpers on the day. They helped us with the organisation and running of the three rotations including, walking tour guide extraordinaire, a beautiful charcoal painting session with two pros and an exciting and challenging historical/culture scavenger hunt with two ultimate mums. Thank you so much for joining us on the day and making it very special for all the students.

2040 Movie viewing:
Thank you to those parents and students that joined us for the 2040 movie viewing in the hall, it was great to see our students relax with their folks. Thank you to Tara, Holly Greening, Joe and Jasper for your excellent speeches at the start of the movie. We raised $100 for the Numbat Association for their protection and rehabilitation, well done Year 6 students!

Book Week:

Book week was so much fun, the students looked wonderful. We loved the opportunity to go through all the other classes in the school to see how hard they had worked on their book week artwork. We even got to take part in some of the projects. Below is a picture of the students visiting Kindy and getting to enjoy their project.

Riddle Time
What word start with an E ends with an E and has only one letter in it? (The answer is at the end of this blog, proceed with caution).

Homework

The students homework is due on Friday the 15th of October.

Please ensure all students are completing their homework and getting you to check it with a signature nightly and then signing the learning grid and homework diary on a Thursday afternoon before it is returned. Students who have not completed their homework will complete it during class time and during recess and lunch, an email will also be sent home to notify you. This organisation and time management skills is vital to aid in an easier transition to high school.

Home Learning Grid includes:

  1. Reading x 20 minutes every night - students to write up the pages that they read that night and the parent to sign every night.
  2. Math - Algebra worksheet - Identifying patterns.
  3. Spelling Activities - pick 3 activities from the spelling menu to complete in the week.
  4. Three well-being tasks from learning grid.
  5. Any unfinished class tasks.
We hope you enjoyed our blog and have a great week!
Cam, Rhavi and Jasper.
