Week 2 - Term 1 2022

 KAYA,

We have made it through the second week of school and swimming lessons - Yippee!! Well done to all the students on their efforts, resilience and hard work during swimming lessons. Now back to reality! πŸ˜… I have told the students to rest up this weekend and fill their cup with the things they love, like a walk on the beach, a surf or whatever makes them happy. Next week, the normal school routine will begin!

Due to the COVID19 restrictions parent information night will be held digitally this year. You should have received a text yesterday with a link to the general information for Year 6 this year. If you do have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Making Jesus Real
If your child had Mr Torrese and Mrs Holt last year, could you please get them to take their Making Jesus Real back to school. This book is meant to be Year 5 and Year 6 resource. If the students have the books at home could you please ask them to take it with them to school please on Monday?

Term 1 Timetable
Please see below picture of our timetable for 6H starting Monday. Please note as of next 6H has physical education with Mrs Sinclair on Tuesday and dance with Mrs Haines on a Friday, so therefore 6H will have to wear their teal school sport uniform on Tuesday and their faction sport uniform on Friday.

External Support Providers
Parents, does your child receive services onsite at OLC during the school day? Either NDIS funded Speech Therapy, OT, Physiotherapy and the like, or music tuition from an outside provider? We are currently reviewing our policy and procedures around this space and require an audit. If your child engages in one of these services, please contact me via email with details as soon as possible. Thank you, amie.meyer@cewa.edu.au

Character Strengths
Dear Parents, currently at OLC we are focusing on modeling and observing different character strengths. The strengths that we will focus on are taken directly from the VIA Institute for Character. If you wanted to learn more about this please follow the link to the 24 character strengths: https://www.viacharacter.org/character-strengths
This upcoming week we are looking for people who show Creativity. Can you encourage your child to reflect on the following?

PAT Testing:
This week we will begin our series of formal PAT assessments which will help further inform our understanding of your child's learning needs, as well as guide groupings within the classroom. The students will be noting in their homework book the days these tests will take place. They do not need to prepare for these in any way, however it is important that they get a good night's rest each day to ensure they are refreshed and ready. These tests will be held over week 3 and 4. These are diagnostic tests which inform the teachers what we need to teach, they are not something for the students to worry about.
PAT Tests:
PAT Vocabulary
PAT Maths Test
PAT Spelling
PAT Reading
PAT Grammar and Punctuation
AGAT Test
Wellbeing Test

Homework
OLC has now got a new homework policy. This policy has taken into account a teacher survey, current literature around homework and discussions with CEWA consultants. As from next week, of this term the only two focuses for homework will be Reading and Times Tables. The students in Year 6 will be asked to read and log their reading every night for a minimum time of 20 minutes to a maximum of 40 minutes of reading. The focus is to encourage and increase the quality of reading time per day and develop conversations and a culture around reading in the school. There will be a selection of times tables to work on with the support of technology as digital practice will be encouraged. Every week the blog for each class will highlight the homework and the classroom teacher will be checking on the students progress fortnightly.

Student Diaries
Our diaries have officially arrived and are ready for action. As of Monday, we will be teaching the students how to use these daily for reminders, such as homework, important notices and events within school.

Enjoy the weekend and I look forward to seeing all the students on Monday.

Kindest regards,

Miss Hurst.
