Week 5 of Term 3

 KAYA,

The Year 6 students really stepped up on Friday and were an integral part of the Mission Markets and its success! The school raised an amazing $2188.00 for Caritas to send to Ukraine. Well done OLC and the Year 6 team.

6H Merit Award

Congratulations to Cooper for winning the 6H merit award last week. This was awarded to Cooper f
or the effort and dedication he puts into his mathematical lessons. He applies himself to the task but also push past the boundaries of his limits to grow and deepen his mathematical learning. I love watching him stick with a problem until he gets on top of it. Well done Cooper, keep up the great work.

Book Week Class Novel
We have just started our class novel for book week, "Rabbit, Solider, Angel, Thief" by Katrina Nannestad. This is a wonderful novel with a deep story, your child may come home and talk about some of the themes that we explore in the book over the upcoming weeks. Including; World War II, Hitler, Russia, Germany, Violence and hope.

Operation Christmas Child 🎄🎅🤶

It's that time of year that we participate in the 'Operation Christmas Child' shoe box initiative that has been a wonderful OLC tradition for many years and reflects our school value of Compassion so well. These shoe boxes are sent to underprivileged children throughout the world as a gift for Christmas.

The children will be placed into in groups of five and between them, they will fill a shoebox with a variety of items. The items do not need to be expensive. Each child in the group will be asked to cover the cost of sending the shoebox to its final destination. We ask them to bring in $2.50 each. The children will be given time in the classroom to pack the shoebox and explore some of the places that their shoe boxes may be travelling to.

Your child has been asked to bring in one of the following:
- Something to love
- Something to play with
- Something to draw with or write on
- Something for personal hygiene
- Something to wear
Please see your child's letter which they brought home last week with the item that they need to bring.

Here are the things that are NOT allowed in the shoe boxes:
Lollies; chocolate or food; fruit rolls or other fruit snacks; drink mixes (powdered or liquid); liquid paint; toothpaste; shampoo; aerosol cans; bubbles; crayons; plasticine/playdough; medicine; vitamins; used clothes; old toys; glass; porcelain; mirrors; war-related items; toy guns, knives; military figures; skull and crossbones; Halloween items; play money; playing cards; dominoes; tracts and Bibles (children are given an Operation Christmas Child evangelistic book at an outreach event).

Thursday 25th August

Thursday the 25th of August is such a busy day that it deserves its own section of the blog.

Book Week 2022

We will be celebrating Book Week on Thursday the 25th August. Thanks to Mary-Lee Kemp and Julie Birch for organizing activities and books for each class. Students are invited (but not required) to dress up on this day. We will not be having a whole school assembly to share costumes, but classes are invited to share their dress ups with their buddy class, and if weather permits we may hold an outdoor parade. Please note we will have a sport lesson on this day so students will need to wear trainers too.
The theme for this years book week is "Dreaming with eyes open". Dreaming with Eyes Open is about stepping into your own story. It invokes thoughts of ancient times, and of listening to Country as the first storyteller. You can, of course, adapt it to your own dreams and future ambitions.

Cricket and AFL Sessions

On Thursday the 25th August SEDA College (South Bunbury) will be coming to OLC to run Cricket and AFL sessions with some of our classes. 6H will be taking part in this session with our buddy class in 2M at 8.40 - 9.40. Because of this the students will need to be ready for their book week costume but be able to participate in the sport lesson.

6H Numbat Guest Speaker Talk

As our numbat talk got cancelled earlier in the term due to COVID it will now be held on the 25th of August from 11am - 12pm. On that day we will be very lucky to get to welcome Jo Drew from Project Numbat who will be volunteering her time to visit us and tell us all about our amazing class totem.

Project Numbat promotes community awareness of the numbat and is involved in numbat conservation by assisting the Numbat Recovery Program objectives including: habitat management, population monitoring, feral predator control, education and awareness programs, fundraising for numbat conservation.

If you would like to find out more about what the awesome Project Numbat does or to donate to their not for profit charity you can visit their website. http://www.numbat.org.au/

Due: Friday 26th August

So we are back to the routine of homework. Over the next two terms you will see a steady increase in the students homework in order to help prepare them for high school. Please ensure this is getting completed. I will be in touch if your child does not present their homework. This weeks homework are listed below:
  1. Reading - 40 minutes a night
  2. Time Tables - Division mash up
  3. Math - 2x Banqer worksheets
You also may have noticed that your child has brought home a Peace Poster to be completed. This is a competition that we run annually in Year 6. This project will also be part of your child's art grade so must be completed. The students have two weeks in class to get this completed then they must complete this at home for homework. Please reach out if you have any questions.
