Term 4 - Week 3

Kaya,

2 weeks down - 7 to go, can you believe it?

This week the students were truly wonderful at Church on Wednesday, it was our first time back in the Church celebrating with the parishioners and the students were wonderful leaders. This week in class we finished working with the order of operations in math and are now moving on to algebra. Do you remember looking for what x and y. We are also continuing with angles in measurement. You will notice your child will have some angles homework this week. We finally completed our class novel "Rabbit Solider Angel Thief. What an amazing novel! You will see an awesome piece of artwork soon from your child related to this artwork on seesaw.

We have a very busy week ahead of us with swimming trials, cultural incursions and PAT testing.

Merit Award
Well done to Emma Rechichi for receiving this weeks merit award. This was for her dedicated and diligent effort that she puts into her learning every day. When Emma has missed a day of school, she can be seen requesting the work that she missed and then asking for feedback when she completes this work. Emma, this shows maturity and autonomy for your own learning journey. What an amazing routine to prepare you for high school. Emma, continue to display excellence in your work ethic as you move on to your next adventure. Well done Emma!

PAT Testing
Over the next two weeks we will begin our series of formal PAT assessments which will help further inform our understanding of your child's learning needs, as well as guide groupings within the classroom and inform our end of year reports. The students will need a fully charged laptop every day for the next two weeks as these tests are computer based. They do not need to prepare for these in any way, however it is important that they get a good night's rest each day to ensure they are refreshed and ready.
PAT Tests Days:
Monday - Reading Test
Tuesday - Spelling
Thursday - Math
Friday - Vocabulary

Writing Procedures
You may have had your child come home and talk about writing, this term we are focused on procedural writing. This form of writing has so many real life applications for the future. The past week we have been writing our own procedure being sure to focus on the detail and the specific details that need to be included. The students have then been challenged to bring in the items they need to allow another person try and complete their procedure following every step. This will be lots of fun for the students, we have already had: tempered chocolate, fairy bread and paper planes. I cannot wait to see what next week brings. Can you please allow your child bring in the items they need to complete their procedure. They will have two opportunities to complete this activity. On Monday they will have after lunch to complete this activity.

Book Club
This term we will be introducing the students to a new novel study during book club. Book club will involve the students being independent and working with their peers to complete an in depth novel study. Students will be allocated one book from the awesome texts seen below. They will then work in a group of 5-8 students. Each week the students will be responsible for reading allocated pages for homework, they will also be responsible for completing one role a week. The roles are listed below. We have been practicing each role in class over the past two weeks as we finished our whole class novel "Rabbit Solider Angel Thief". Then the students will present their role and discuss the chapters with their book club every Friday. The students are allowed to bring popcorn for this book club to share with their peers as they discuss the literature.

Book Club Roles
The Summariser - will summarise one of the chapters that they read for the week. They will focus on the 'who, what, where, when and why' to help them retell the main events.

The Director - will compose four questions to discuss during the Book Club Meeting. These questions will use ideas from the novel, they most be open questions not closed. The director is also in charge of checking in with all students in their book club and hosting the book club on a Friday.

The Word Finder - will find a minimum of five interesting or unusual words from the text. They then use these words to complete a dictionary meaning, the sentence that the word was in and another sentence using the word in the same context.

The Illustrator - will create an illustration from a scene in the book. There objective is to use as much detail and colour as possible so that their group members can pick the scene without reading the caption.

The Connector - will try and make a 'text to text', a 'text to self' and a 'text to world' connection from the required pages for that week. The most important part of making a connection is writing down how that connection helps you create a deeper understand of the novel. This could include a deeper understanding of the setting or the character's feelings.

Swimming Trials
On Tuesday, we will be attending time trials at the swimming pool with years 4-6 at the Geographe Leisure Centre. The students will depart school on the bus at 8.40am and return at approximately 12.30pm (in time for lunch orders if required.) Please advise via email if your child is unable to swim the distance of a 25m pool.

Please ensure your child has on the day:

· Bathers – worn to school under their faction sports uniform at Carnival (teal sport polo only for trials)

· Sports shoes and socks worn to school – thongs can be worn at the pool only

· Faction coloured sport uniform

· Recess and water

· Hat

· Towel

· Sunscreen

Rashie – for sun protection and practical reasons, all students swimming are to wear a rashie in and out of the pool.

Please make sure all items are clearly labelled. Please apply sunscreen to your child before they leave for school.

Year 6 Cultural Incursion
