Week 3 and 4 of Term 3

 KAYA,

It has been a wonderful first two weeks back to school despite the crazy winter weather, we have jumped back into routines, worked hard and continuing to develop our leadership skills. We have a busy few weeks ahead, including camp preparation, human development workshops, class totem incursions and OLC mission market day. Hoo-wee we are some busy Year 6 students in the upcoming weeks!

Making Jesus Real:
On Thursday afternoon the students from 6H, worked very hard to sort out thousands of bottle caps by colour so that they can be recycled with Precious Plastics and turned into something awesome like flower pots, surf fins, etc. Thank you team 6H and well done you all smashed it!

A massive shout out and congratulations to James, Max, and Zeph on their impressive submission in the CNA Minecraft Challenge! They were judged as the best submission for Year 6 overall. In recognition of their achievement, CEWA were thrilled to present Our Lady of the Cape Primary School with a $300 gift card to spend on Technology items for the school. The winning certificate is a testament to their exceptional skills and abilities showcased throughout the competition.

Well done to the magnificent OLC cross country athletes who competed in the SWAPSA interschool cross country event in Bunbury on Thursday. The students all represented OLC wonderfully and with great attitude and effort. Thanks to Mrs Sinclair for preparing and motivating the students. So many of our students achieved top 10 places. Amazing! All our students demonstrated gut and determination.

Human Development Workshop:
This upcoming Wednesday 2nd August, the students will participate in Human Development talks that will be presented by The Centre for Life, Marriage and Family. They will cover an introductory program on growth and development with the Year 6 students via zoom. There is still outstanding permission slips that need to be returned for your child to be able to participate in the program, otherwise we will assume your child is not participating and will be sent to another classroom.

OLC Mission Markets:
This upcoming Friday 4th August, the students will participate in our traditional OLC Mission Market Day. This is a day to appreciate and understand Mary as our Patroness; to understand and celebrate the Feast of the Assumption; to raise awareness of those less fortunate in the world, and to “give” as an antidote to need. The layout of the markets this year will include some in classroom activities that children pay money to enter and participate in, as well as some physical activities on the oval, alongside the traditional stalls in the outside spaces. This will be an excellent day for the Year 6 students to showcase their leadership skills. The day will run as follows:
    • 8.40 - 10.00 - Morning activities in the classroom
    • 10.00 - 10.40 - Assumption of Mary - whole school liturgy in the hall
    • 10.40 - 11.00 - Recess
    • 11.00 - 11.30 - Year 6 students to set up the classroom stalls
    • 11.30 - 12.50 - Market stalls open (Year 6 students working on a roster to run the stalls)
    • 12.50 - 1.00 - Year 6 students to clean up market stalls and return items to the teachers.
    • 1.00 - 1.40 - Lunch
    • 1.40 - 2.00 - Whole school clean up
    • 2.00 - 3.00 - Assembly in the hall.

Operation Christmas Child:
All the children in Year Six will soon  participate in 'Operation Christmas Child' which is an initiative with the goal of packing shoeboxes full of little surprises to give to a child who may have never received a gift before at Christmas. By participating in this our children will have a first hand experience aimed at building the school value of compassion. At the moment, we have received only three students contributions. The cost to send a shoe box will be $2.50 per child.  We are asking you to encourage your child to do something extra at home to earn the money that is needed to buy the item to put into the provided shoe box. Your child brought home a note on Tuesday which indicated what age, gender and category your child needs to provide for. The categories include: something to loves, something to play with, something to draw with and write on, something of personal hygiene and something to wear. We are asking for all donations to be brought to school by Friday 18th August (Week 5) please. It is very exciting for the children to share in this initiative which has been a part of the OLC community for the last 19 years.

Year 6 Camp 2023:
Can you believe we are only three weeks away from camp time! We are so excited to take the Year 6 students on camp this year! On Friday, the students took home a medical form with a permission slip. Can you please ensure that you read the entire letter and fill in all necessary detail including medicines, dietary requirements and any sleep support, etc. This will need to be completed and returned on Friday the 4th of August. If you have any questions with the letter please do not hesitate to reach out.

As a class, we also explored the website for the camp we will be attending - Forest Edge in Waroona! The purpose of this was to help with some anxious feelings and give the students an opportunity to view the accommodation, activities and view the facilities that will be available to them on camp. If you would like to explore this at home as a family the website link is: https://www.forestedge.net/

This upcoming Friday your child will also take home a packing list for camp. This will help the students to prepare their bags for camp using this list. We advise to use this packing list and cross the items off as they put them in their bag so they do not forget any items. The students will also have an opportunity to write their 3 preferences of students that they would like to share a dorm with, this will then be organised by the teachers.

Camp Homework:
This week the students will have to begin their Seesaw Camp homework. There will be one task every week. This weeks task will include setting and clearing the table from dinner every day. The students will need to video one of the days that they set the table and one of the days that they clear the table and upload this to seesaw. Please ensure you support your child in getting this done as it will be awesome preparation for what they will be expected to do on camp.
